The African Trauma Initiative is a student led research initiative at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Our students work on research that is vital to alleviating trauma in underserved regions around the world.

The African Trauma Initiative (ATI) is a global health collaboration committed to strengthening trauma care systems across Africa through research and education. Founded through a partnership between orthopedic trauma surgeons at The University of Kansas Health System and Saint Paul’s Millennium Medical College in Ethiopia, ATI now operates physician and nursing fellowship programs in both Ethiopia and Zambia.
Through these training programs, ATI educates surgeons, nurses, and medical students with the skills necessary to deliver state-of-the-art trauma care. ATI also works to address critical shortages of medical equipment in under-resourced hospitals in Ethiopia and Zambia. This ensures that healthcare professionals not only have the knowledge, but the tools they need to save lives.
Funds raised support the ongoing fellowship programs with African doctors and nurses, and also help support international educational experiences for medical students who participate in clinical rotations, service learning, and global health research projects. Our initiative actively engages University of Kansas students across a wide range of disciplines—including architecture, film, business, and medicine—to contribute their skills and perspectives to collaborative, real-world projects.
Since 2024, ATI has raised about $250,000 towards fellowship programs and international educational experiences
