The African Trauma Initiative is a student led research initiative at the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Our students work on research that is vital to alleviating trauma in underserved regions around the world.
The African Trauma Initiative (ATI) at the University of Kansas is at the forefront of groundbreaking research in trauma care, conducted primarily by medical students from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Our research covers a diverse range of topics, with a strong focus on trauma in regions such as Zambia, the Congo, and Ethiopia. This work is vital for establishing the credibility needed to advance our projects and improve trauma care across these regions.
Our research initiatives are not confined to the classroom; they extend into real-world environments where students engage in on-the-ground research during educational experiences. To date, our students have traveled to hospitals in Romania and Ethiopia, gaining invaluable insights and contributing to the global body of trauma care knowledge. These educational experiences, crucial for developing the next generation of global health leaders, cost approximately $4,000 USD per student.
ATI’s research efforts also include collaboration with the KU School of Business, where business interns contribute to research focused on the data needed for building hospitals in low- to middle-income countries. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that our projects are not only scientifically sound but also financially and operationally sustainable.
